Perimenopause: Why everyone is talking about it now

Table of Contents

As a gynaecologist at the best gynaecology clinic in Dubai, I’ve noticed a striking trend: perimenopause is everywhere right now—on social media, in wellness newsletters, and even on the shelves in stores. But why the sudden spotlight on a phase that’s always been part of the natural transition in a woman’s life?

Perimenopause refers to the transitional phase before menopause, when the ovaries gradually begin to produce less estrogen. It can last anywhere from a few months to several years, and typically begins in a woman’s 40s—but it can start earlier or later. During this time, women may experience irregular periods, hot flashes, mood changes, sleep disruptions, or no noticeable symptoms at all.

Is It Awareness—or Marketing?

The growing conversation is, in part, a positive shift. For years, perimenopause and menopause were barely discussed. Many women suffered silently, thinking their symptoms were just something they had to “get through.” Now, we’re seeing more open dialogue, shared experiences, and attempts to normalize this stage of life.

But not all of the attention is neutral. Some of the noise is being driven by marketing—an explosion of supplements, hormone testing, and “solutions” that are often offered without clear guidance or individualized care. Social media influencers and even some health brands are portraying perimenopause as a problem that needs urgent fixing, often with products or plans that aren’t grounded in evidence.

Here’s the Truth: Perimenopause Isn’t a Disease

Perimenopause is not a diagnosis. It’s a natural transition—often beginning in the 40s—that leads up to menopause. It doesn’t require a specific test to confirm (hormone levels fluctuate too much to be consistently reliable), and for many women, it doesn’t require any treatment at all.

What Should You Do?

It depends entirely on how you feel. If your symptoms are significantly affecting your daily life—sleep issues, mood changes, irregular periods, or discomfort—then yes, there are options. These range from lifestyle adjustments and non-hormonal support to hormone therapy, which is safe and effective for many women when appropriately prescribed.

But if you feel fine? There’s nothing to fix. No test to chase. No supplement you must take. This is your body, moving through a natural evolution.

Empowerment, Not Panic

Each stage of womanhood brings its own changes. Perimenopause is just one of them. It’s not something to fear or rush to medicate, but rather something to understand, navigate, and own—in your way.
